Car Insurance UK
If you drive a car you probably already know that motor insurance is a necessity. Most people can't afford to replace or repair a car that is damaged in an accident, but they can afford to make a small payment on a regular basis to an insurance company. Insurance companies cover many of the costs that can be incurred in the event of an auto mishap so that you don't have to worry about spending money you don't have.

Car insurance can also cover legal costs if you are taken to court by a third party for causing an accident. If you are required to pay compensation to a third party, car insurance often pays for this as well. Other costs covered by car insurance include: theft, medical expenses, towing costs, and damage due to fire.

In the UK people who own and operate cars have four basic choices of car insurance. "Act Only" is the minimum required coverage and is rarely used, as this type of coverage only covers for third party risks on public roads. It tends to be taken out by people with a bad driving record who can't get anything else.

Third party insurance is one step ahead of "Act Only" insurance, in that it provides third party coverage for driving on both public and private roads. Third party claims and liabilities are covered under this type of plan, as well as legal costs. Third party fire and theft insurance provides all the protection you get from third party insurance but adds coverage for damage or loss specifically due to either theft or fire. This is often a good type of insurance to obtain because it provides a good amount of coverage for a lower cost than comprehensive insurance. It can be especially affordable and efficient if you own an older car that is not currently worth a lot of money.

Comprehensive cover provides you with the largest amount of protection available in car insurance. If you want to be covered for almost anything, then this type of insurance is for you. It doesn't cover everything, but it does cover everything mentioned in the above policies and adds accidental damage to the mix. This means that if your vehicle acquires damage due to something other than an accident for which you are responsible, fire, or theft, you can still reap the benefits of your insurance coverage. This usually includes medical expenses cover for both driver and passengers in your vehicle.

Be aware, however, that comprehensive insurance does not cover everything. And it is very important to read the fine print of your insurance policy so you know exactly what you're covered for, especially because exclusions vary from policy to policy.
